The cry from Jatinangor
October 16th, 2006 by fajaranugerahDear All,
My experience
I’d like to share my experience in kampus Psikologi Unpad Jatinangor.
It has been a truly learning experience.
I learned to realize my traits, my strengths and shortcomings.
I learned how to struggle and labor for something that I wanted.
I learned how to exert my maximum mental energy for a minimum results.
I learned that my earlier view of psychology as an interesting field of social science, is not so interesting after all.
I
learned that questioning a teacher’s view in the classroom may not be
so easily as they portray academical life in movies and films.
I
learned that I cant be a sandal-and-tshirt wearing psychology student,
attending classes and enjoying theatrical play or musical concerts in
between them. A protrayal I received from watching too many western
movies and tv films) =p
I dont care about what time the
administration staff went home, but it’s ridiculous if we have to wait
for the staff to get into the library at 09.00, or to write a request
letter whenever I want an academical transcript (other campus’ students
receive it as a monthly service).
I cant accept whenever I was
being yelled at or sent away from class by a dosen because I’m
late….but whenever they’re late or absent without notice, it’s fine.
(I initiated my class to strike against a dosen one day, when she came
one and a half hour late, THREE TIMES IN A ROW without notice)
I
got disappointed when a proposal initiated by students, to modernize
the campus’ computer network and administration software system, was
rejected. The fact that it can improve the grading system, daftar ulang
procedures, KRS procedures, perwalian procedures (the shortcomings
frequently experienced by students).
It amused me how teachers
came up with test mark but won’t show the student’s paper to tell them
where they’re wrong and right. It was a new record when one of the
class received their marks on a subject 1,5 years after they passed the
semester it was taken. (Thank goodness I wasn’t in the class, for I
would’ve protested and showed them the university regulation that
stated they oughta received minimal B for every subject results which
is displayed one semester late ).
It was hilarious how student
have to rent for a digital projecter for his seminar, because all of
the now-obsolete-OHPs weren’t available. It was uncanny that a
student’s work is accepted and admitted in a small yet scientific
publishing when he’s a pushover at campus.
My opinion
The new
generation Psychology students are not necessarily directed to become
psychologists. They may be taught the standards of psychological ethics
and skills but not necessarily be expected to perform like their
predecessors. There should me a more lenient approach to the
undergraduate program, where students are taught the basics of
psychology and its unlimited application or development in real life
settings. Undergraduate students oughta stimulated to be interested to
know more about psychology (in magister or profession programs!). Sure
they must know Freud and Fromm, Erikson and Jung, James and Maslow,
Heidegger and Lacan, Horney and Adler, Watson and Sullivan, Pavlov and
Piaget. But above all they must understand that they’re studying human
and therefor must try their best to be humane themselves (although many
humans outthere are inhumanely treating fellow humans!).
The new
generations of Undergraduate Psychology programs oughta received what
they deserve, a service from an educational institution with long
history of perfection and harmony. They should be able to get their
transcript easily, they’re supposed to be able to learn the diversity
of psychology application (tvcommercial, international diplomacy,
consumer research, forensic psychology, pre-school learning, etc). This
in mind, we can accept foreign students and conduct international
classes.
I’m not a laid back complaining student. All the time
in Psychology, I was actively endeavoring ways to improve our campus,
the best that I can do. It may not be much but I did it wholeheartedly.
But it was too exhausting, me and a bunch of other "rascals" were like
swimming against the current.
I’m not closing my eyes against
changes and improvements done recently (they reduced the number of
dosen pembimbing skripsi to only one per students. It cleared many
problems faced by students with two dosen pembimbing! Congrats on
this). But they’re too little and too slow. We need more efforts, we
need more money, we need more people power and most of all we need YOU,
fellow alumni.
Lets do what we can to salvage and bring back the
glory of Psychology Unpad. We need to prepare it for the future. The
transition from PTN into BHMN, from local students to international
students, from book-based library into internet-knowledge library, from
teacher-oriented learning program to student-oriented learning program,
from testing-psychology to life-psychology, from fotokopian catetan to
soft-copy, from OHP presentation to Power Point Presentation. It may be
nice to reminiscent the glorious past, but it is more exhilarating and
challenging to prepare for the glorious tomorrow.
I’m writing this
in English maybe because I want only selected few people who bother to
read and try to understand it. Maybe I’m writing this in English, out
of my sentiment always being told that Psychology UI students are
better in English and presentation skill. But I think, I write this in
English because I CAN and I havent been able to do this in campus.
Quo Vadis Fakultas Psikologi?
The answer is not out there, only we can answer it
